Among the many stories one being that, on this day Lord Shiva was married to Parvati, another being that it was on this day that Lord performed Tandav and many more stories go on.
As Lord is considered to be the perfect husband, all unmarried women keep fast in order to praise Lord Shiva so that they also get a perfect husband just like him. He married women keep fast for the progress of their husbands.
In Delhi devotees get up early in the morning take bath (if possible in the Ganges river), wear new clothes (which are not worn even once) and visit the temple.
The Shiv ling is given bath with milk and water along with the usual rituals. To be freed from the worldly problems is the biggest freedom ever and it is believed that Lord Shiva frees his devotees from the pains and sufferings of the life on earth, so most of the devotees pray to Lord to free them from these problems.
It is also believed that on this day Lord grants to his devotees anything they wish for. All over India there are enormous numbers of people who believe in Lord Shiva especially in Delhi there are many devotees.
This is a perfect day to see faith, love and trust that people show in Lord Shiva. Their devotion definitely does not go unnoticed. It is this faith only that has made this festival an important part of the proud Indian culture |
