On the 30th of January 1948 Gandhiji was making his way to pray at the Biral Bhavan when he was shot in the chest and killed. His last rites were performed at Rajghat the next day. Rajghat is located just 4km away from Janpath near Feroz Shah in Delhi. It is situated on the banks of the river Yamuna.
A black stone square in shape was placed here in memory of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. The words “hey ram” are inscribed on this stone. People from all over the world come here to pay their respects to this great human being.
VIPs, foreigners and common people visit this place to pay homage. Rajghat is well looked after and is developed as a tourist place in Delhi. As it is located not too far out from the city, it can be easily accessed or visited comfortably.
Pictures, photos and sculptures depicting the various stages in Mahatma Gandhi's are available for viewing here to all visitors. Gandhi died on a Friday and hence on every Friday a prayer is held in his respect.
A museum in his honour, that is the Gandhi Memorial Museum can be visited here that offers information about his life and philosophies. His views and thoughts about the Sarvodaya Movement can also be seen in film.
Rajghat is one of Delhi's most sought after tourist spots. Gandhi Balidansthal is another Gandhi memorial that is located in the city. It is the spot where Gandhiji was assassinated on that fateful day in 1948. |
