It is built with red sandstone but also consists of black and white marble for some visual effect. The area is enclosed by high stonewalls. It is a large square area that is divided by waterways or channels into four smaller squares.
The Humayun Tomb is a splendid example of Mughal architecture. There are series of chambers that rise up from a podium that are built with arched openings. The central or main chamber of the tomb is octagonal in shape.
The roof or the tomb is surmounted with a massive double dome of marble that rises above 40m high. Two lofty gateways are built to enter the enclosure at the West and the South directions respectively.
Within the compound of Humayun's Tomb lies some other sites also that are built to pay homage to other Mughal greats. There is the mansion of Hakeem Ashanullah Khan who was the personal physician of Bahadur Shah Jafar that spans more than 2000 square yards.
Barbar's tomb and Fahim Khan's tomb are the other elegant structures that are to be found here. The others buried here are Hamida Banu Begum, Dara Shikoh, Jalandar Shah, Alamgir II and so on.
Humayun Tomb was the first full-fledged garden tomb to be built in India. It laid the base for the construction of the Taj Mahal in Agra. The interior of the tomb has graceful architecture and is lined with cravings, paintings and floral designs. The picturesque Humayun Tomb is indeed one of Delhi's finest monuments.
